Story:
In 2006, a group of friends from Manjummel decided to take a trip to Kodaikanal. They were inspired by another group they didn’t like, who often went on trips and had a great time. The Manjummel Boys felt envious and wanted to enjoy life like their rivals.
During their visit to Kodaikanal, they explored the Guna Cave, also known as Devil’s Kitchen. Unfortunately, one of their friends fell into a deep pit inside the cave. This pit was notorious because no one who fell in had ever come out alive.
The film tells the story of how the Manjummel Boys managed to save their friend from this dangerous situation in the Devil’s Kitchen cave.

Turning real-life stories into movies is tough, especially for survival thrillers like “Manjummel Boys.” Director Chidambaram skillfully portrays true events with passion, focusing on human emotions, particularly friendship.
Initially, the film doesn’t show detailed visuals of when a friend falls into the pit. However, when this scene unfolds later, it evokes tension and emotion, knowing it’s based on a real event.
As the friends arrive in Kodaikanal, the pace of the movie accelerates. The seamless connection of childhood memories with the main incident helps us empathize with Subhash’s character.
The production design team created a stunning and realistic set for the scenes inside the pit. The entire rescue operation, accompanied by a captivating background score by Shusin Shyam and exceptional visuals by Shyju Khalid, keeps us on the edge of our seats.
Additionally, the placement of the beautiful song “Priyathama Neevachata Kusalama” is sure to leave a lasting impression in theaters.

Manjummel Boys might take a while to grab our attention because the beginning of the movie isn’t very exciting. The first half moves slowly, especially in the first 40 minutes, and nothing really interesting happens. The way they introduce the world and characters could have been done better.
The beginning scenes aren’t necessarily bad. In fact, they tie into the climax of the movie, but they could have been executed better. It also feels like the movie is drawn out unnecessarily.
The story is straightforward, so it’s not hard to guess what will happen in the end. This predictability takes away from the experience a bit. The director didn’t exaggerate the real events, so some scenes might feel less exciting for certain viewers.
Technical Aspects:
Ajayan Chalissery’s production design, along with Shijin Hutton and Abhishek Nair’s sound design, Shusin Shyam’s background score, and Shyju Khalid’s cinematography, bring this survival thriller to life. The editing gets better in the second half, though it could have been smoother in the first hour.
Chidambaram’s direction is solid, particularly in delivering emotional impact. His vision for presenting the incident on the big screen is commendable.
Additionally, the film pays tribute to Kamal Haasan’s legendary “Guna” and the beautiful “Priyathama” track.

Overall, “Manjummel Boys” is an impressive survival thriller that is also very emotional. The second half is very engaging, especially during the rescue operation scenes that are shot exceptionally well. Shoubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Deepak Parambol, and the rest of the cast deliver commendable performances.
On the downside, the first half lacks engagement and moves slowly. Additionally, the story becomes somewhat predictable as it nears the climax. However, the film is solid technically and deserves to be experienced in theaters. Recommended.
