Rajinikanth is a household name in the film industry, known by almost everyone. He’s a famous actor, producer, and successful screenwriter in Tamil cinema.

He’s not just a superstar; he’s also revered like a god in Tamil cinema. Rajinikanth is renowned for his unique style in films, earning him the title of the “King of Style.”

People call him by various names like Rajni, Style Mannan, Rajini, Thalaivar, or Super Star, but his real name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad.

He’s incredibly popular not only in South India but across the entire country, with fans in every corner.

Rajinikanth’s exceptional acting skills have earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan from the Government of India, which are among the highest civilian honors in the country

Early Life:

Rajinikanth was born in 1950 in Bangalore, which was part of Mysore State at that time, on December 12th, into a Marathi family. Today, Mysore State is known as Karnataka state. His birth name was Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, but it was changed later. He was named after Shivaji Maharaj. He came from a simple family. His father, Ramoji Rao Gaikwad, worked as a police constable, and his mother, Jijabai, was a homemaker. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was just nine years old. He had three brothers named Satyanarayana Rao, Shivaji Rao, and Nageshwara Rao, and one sister named Aswath Balubhai. Rajinikanth was the youngest among them

Rajinikanth spent his childhood in Bangalore, where he attended Gavipuram Government Kannada Model Primary School for his primary education. He was a good student and had a keen interest in sports like cricket, football, and basketball during his school days. His elder brother enrolled him in Ramakrishna Math, where he learned about Vedas, history, and religious texts. Later, he continued his studies at Acharya Pathasala Public School until the 12th grade.

Early Career:

After completing his education, Rajinikanth took up various odd jobs to support his family. One of his jobs was that of a bus conductor with the Bangalore Transport Service (BTS). His interest in theater and acting led him to participate in various stage plays and dramas, earning him recognition for his performances.

Acting Career:

In 1973, Rajinikanth enrolled at the Madras Film Institute with the assistance of his friend Raj Bahadur, who was also a bus driver. He completed a basic course in acting, receiving support from the institute’s vice principal, A. Prabhakaran.

Rajinikanth has appeared in a total of 190 movies, spanning Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, English, and Bengali films. While he ventured into Bollywood with films like “Andha Kanoon,” his impact wasn’t as significant as in the South. He still made appearances in Hindi films such as “Chaalbaaz” with Sridevi, “Uttar Dakshan,” “Geraftaar,” and “Hum.”

His Hollywood debut came with the movie “Bloodstone” in 1988, which generated excitement upon its release in India but failed to make an impact in the United States.

Rajinikanth’s debut in Tamil cinema was in 1975, initially taking on supporting roles. He played a cancer patient in “Apoorva Raagangal,” directed by K. Balachander, whom Rajinikanth often refers to as his “guru” or “mentor.”

The following year, Rajinikanth starred in his first Kannada film, “Katha Sangama,” directed by Puttanna Kanagal. While Rajinikanth acknowledges K. Balachander as his mentor, it was director S. P. Muthuraman who played a significant role in completely transforming Rajinikanth’s image.

Awards & Achievements:


  • He won the Filmfare South Awards for the Tamil language film Nallavanukku Nallavanin 1984 in the Best Actor category.
  • He also won the eight Filmfans Association Award for the Tamil language film Aarilirunthu Arubathu Varaiin 1979; Enkeyo Ketta Kural in 1982; Nallavanuku Nallavan in 1984; Sri Raghavendra in 1985; Thalapathy in 1991; Annamalai in 1992; Baashha, and Muthu in 1995 in the Best Actor category, and for film Valli in 1993 he received the award in Best Story Writer category.
  • For the Telegu film Peddarayuduin 1995, he also won South Screen Awards in the Best Actor Category.
  • He also received seven-time Tamil Nadu State Film Awardsfor the films Mullum Malarum, Moondru Mugam, Muthu, Padayappa, Chandramukhi, and Sivaji in various categories, including Best Actor, Special Award, and Honorary Award.
  • In the year 2021,Rajinikanth was honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to cinema; in the field of cinema, this award is the highest of all.
  • Rajinikanth has been honoured with two of the country’s highest civilian awards; in the year 2000,he was awarded one of the country’s third-highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan, and in the year 2016, he was also awarded Padma Vibhushan, which is a second-highest civilian award in India, by the Government of India.
  • Rajinikanth has also received the Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year, AIcon of Golden Jubilee of IFFI Award, Rajiv Gandhi Award, Kalaimamani Award, M.G.R-Sivaji Award, Nandi Awards, NDTV Award, Vijay Awards, Cinema Express Awards, and many more awards for his superb acting.
