Story: “Tantra” revolves around Rekha, a girl plagued by persistent encounters with malevolent spirits, instilling fear in her. Meanwhile, Teju harbors affection for Rekha since childhood, yet he faces social discrimination due to his mother’s profession as a prostitute. Despite these adversities, Rekha and Teju’s bond strengthens over time.
However, Rekha becomes the target of the malevolent spirits, leading her to resort to consuming her own blood. The movie delves into the reasons behind the spirits’ pursuit of Rekha and her efforts to protect herself while nurturing her love with Teju.
Plus Ponits: The movie’s core concept is captivating as it delves into the scenario of a girl born with supernatural abilities, constantly besieged by demons and spirits. This premise raises intriguing questions about the origins and implications of her powers, particularly in relation to the mysterious rituals performed by others seeking to harness them.
Additionally, the film effectively engages viewers by presenting well-developed character arcs for Saloni and delivering a compelling emotional horror storyline centered around Ananya Nagalla’s character. These elements contribute to the overall intrigue and depth of the narrative, capturing the audience’s attention from the outset.
Ananya Nagalla, who played the main character, delivered an outstanding performance. Dhanush Raghumudri, portraying the male lead, convincingly portrayed his character with realism. Saloni excelled in her significant role, while Temper Vamsi made an impact as the antagonist. Meesala Lakshman and others performed satisfactorily in their respective roles.
Minus Points: “Tantra” doesn’t bring anything new to Telugu cinema, as occult powers and ghosts have been explored before. The horror effects feel repetitive, like many recent movies. The story focuses mainly on the heroine but lacks a coherent plot, with too many subplots that don’t tie together well. The film’s main idea could have worked if these subplots had a proper resolution, but they don’t.
The conflict isn’t compelling, and the pacing feels slow in many scenes. The main characters aren’t developed effectively. While Ananya Nagalla’s performance is good, her character’s development declines as the movie progresses. The director tries to make the first half exciting, and the concept has potential, but the film fails to engage due to illogical scenes and a dull screenplay. “Tantra” starts off promising but loses momentum with unnecessary scenes later on
Technical Aspects: The emotional parts of the movie could have been more effective if the screenplay was better. The director, Srinivas Gopisetty, chose an interesting topic, but the way the story is told makes the movie less enjoyable. The songs by RR Dhruvan are nice. The natural scenery and visuals are captured well by the cinematographers. However, the editing could have been better. Overall, the production quality is decent.
Verdict: “Tantra” is a horror revenge story that doesn’t bring anything fresh to the table. There are only a few scenes and emotional moments that are okay. However, the movie suffers from slow pacing, too many subplots, a weak screenplay, and a lack of interesting elements in the second half. Despite having potential, the way the story is presented makes the film disappointing overall.
